By 2026, security monitoring has shifted from a reactive to a proactive approach, anticipating, verifying and taking action before a situation escalates.
A Market Growing Faster Than Most People Realise
The numbers tell their own story. The global alarm monitoring market climbed from $62.62 billion in 2025 to $66.92 billion in 2026, a 6.9% annual growth rate that puts it on track to hit $86.96 billion by 2030, according to The Business Research Company. Closer to home, the UK alarm monitoring sector was valued at roughly $1.45 billion in 2023 and is forecast to reach $2.6 billion by 2030, while the wider UK Security System Services industry now sits at around £2.1 billion, per IBISWorld’s 2026 analysis.
That growth isn’t happening in a vacuum. Rising crime figures, wider adoption of smart devices and a genuine appetite among property managers for better visibility into what’s happening on-site are all pulling in the same direction: more intelligent, more connected security monitoring.
AI Is Doing the Thinking, Not Just the Watching
The next big change is that instead of just picking up signals, monitoring centres are beginning to interpret them. Modern platforms can link environmental data, occupancy patterns, video feeds and historical activity to alert to suspect activity before it becomes a real threat. As CIO of Zeus Fire & Security, Priya Serai has said this well: Monitoring is no longer simply about reacting to alarms; it’s about predicting threats and providing intelligence that can drive action within the business.
It’s similar to the difference between a smoke alarm and a weather forecast. One tells you that there is already a fire. The other tells you that the conditions are favourable and you have time to get ready. It’s the leap that security monitoring has taken from alarm bells to early warning.

For years, CCTV footage was something you reviewed after the fact, useful for insurance claims, less useful for stopping anything in the moment. That model is on its way out. Pairing an alarm trigger with an instant video snapshot lets a monitoring operator confirm, in seconds, whether they’re looking at a genuine break-in or a cat setting off a motion sensor.
The scale of this shift is hard to ignore. CHeKT’s platform, which combines live video with alarm data and AI analytics, generated more than 500,000 real-time alerts in 2025 alone and hit a record 55,462 positive alerts in a single month in May 2026. UK retailers using similar systems logged 297,433 alerts tied to known repeat offenders entering stores in just the first half of 2026. Three figures now sit at the centre of how performance gets measured: time-to-detection, time-to-verification and time-to-response. Together they decide whether a real incident gets a real response or whether it slips through as one more unconfirmed signal.
We’ll admit this took the industry longer to embrace than it should have. For years, video was treated as an add-on rather than a core verification tool and plenty of providers, ourselves included, in the early days underestimated how much faster a confirmed visual could make a dispatch decision.
Cloud Platforms Are Changing What “Monitoring” Even Means
Cloud-based monitoring has quietly repositioned itself from a back-office function into something clients actively notice and value. Tammy Cozby, VP of Monitoring Operations at Everon, has pointed out that monitoring has never mattered more to both revenue potential and customer experience,e a sentiment that reflects a broader move away from monitoring as a cost line and toward monitoring as a genuine service differentiator.
Part of what’s driving this is consolidation. Fragmented systems video in one place, access logs in another, incidents tracked over email create blind spots. Businesses in 2026 are asking for a single environment: one dashboard for users, policies and evidence, with integrations that actually connect rather than just coexist. It’s a shift our facility management services clients have raised directly, particularly those managing multiple sites where fragmented reporting used to mean hours of manual cross-checking.
IoT Has Widened the Net Far Beyond Break-Ins
Monitoring centres now watch over far more than intruder alarms. Freezer and pharmaceutical temperature thresholds, smoke and carbon monoxide levels, water leaks and power quality all feed into the same systems that once handled burglar alerts alone. Dealers offering these expanded services command noticeably higher monthly rates than security-only monitoring, turning what used to be a single revenue stream into several sticky, recurring ones.
Homeowners are following the same trend. The UK smart home security camera market is projected to grow from roughly £1.2–1.4 billion in 2026 to £2.6–3.0 billion by 2035 and in recent surveys, 15% of people upgrading their homes this year prioritised security and door solutions specifically.
The Digital Switchover: A Deadline You Can’t Ignore
If there’s one date every business with a monitored alarm should have circled, it’s 31 January 2027. That’s when Openreach retires the UK’s copper telephone network for good and any alarm panel still dialling out over a PSTN landline will lose its ability to reach an Alarm Receiving Centre. Openreach has confirmed the date is locked in, with no further extension expected, after already pushing it back once from an original December 2025 target.
The risk here is quiet rather than dramatic. A system can appear to be working normally right up until the line goes digital, at which point it fails silently, often with no obvious warning to the building owner. For systems built to EN 50131 grades, dual-path signalling combining broadband and mobile is now the standard safeguard and it’s one of the first things our mobile security patrols & lock up services clients ask us to check when we review their site setup.
Local authorities are already moving. Kirklees Council, for example, selected Enovation’s Universal Monitoring Software as its digital ARC solution starting April 2026, under a five-year contract a sign of how seriously public bodies are taking the transition.
Compliance Is Tightening Too
The Crime and Policing Act 2026 abolished the “low-value theft” classification, meaning shoplifting under £200 is no longer treated as a minor offence. That single change has raised the bar for evidence capture and alarm verification across the retail sector, making accredited, video-enabled monitoring less of a nice-to-have and more of an operational necessity.
Accreditation still matters just as much as the technology behind it. NSI and SSAIB remain the two bodies UK insurers and police forces recognise and NSI Gold Category 1 continues to represent the highest standard of Alarm Receiving Centre monitoring in the country. Companies holding either accreditation can apply for police Unique Reference Numbers, a detail that directly affects how quickly police respond to a confirmed alarm.
What This Means for You
None of these trends exists in isolation. AI, video verification, cloud platforms and the digital switchover are converging on the same outcome: monitoring that’s faster, better evidenced and harder to fool. If your systems still lean on legacy infrastructure or unverified alarm signals, the gap between where you are and where the industry is heading will only widen.
A sensible starting point is an honest audit: check whether any of your alarm panels still rely on a copper landline, confirm your provider holds NSI or SSAIB accreditation and ask whether video verification is built into your current setup.
